Few pics of Brushless converted Hyper 7!

Hey as you know i converted my hyper 7 into Brushless power and thought i was time to take some new pics. This was a few days ago and the only different chages to it now is that i am running a power hd servo instead of the stock futaba one and also a motor heatsink fan to aid in cooling the motor!

Photobucket

Detailed Spec list will be available soon!

EDF Project is now scrapped!

As you saw in my ealier posts i was going to be making an edf powered rc car but i have been thinking, there is no real need to do something like this which is not going to be cheap has no brakes and is fairly loud. So im afraid to say that this idea is now going to be forgotten. The car that i was going to use, i believe an old CEN chassis will be up for sale soon so keep checking to grab a bargain. All it needs is electronics and shell and it should be a fairly good on road tourer.

EDF RC Car Project

My inspiration for this project came from a video i saw on youtube a couple of weeks back. Its simply a EDF (electric ducted fan) much like a jet strapped onto a car which is powered by a brushless speed controller and lipo battery. These are used in RC planes to reach incredible speeds and have rarely been used on land based vehicles. My base for this project is an old Cen roller which needed some attention, when it arrived it was thick with grease and needed a really good cleanup.

This is how it was:

I stripped it down and cleaned each individual part, you can see this process below:

As you can see the parts were thick with grease

All the screws were starting to rust and very fragile, this was helped by a WD40 bath :)

The shocks were in a very bad state only one was working and none of them had oil in them!

This is how its looking now, fully degreased :)

More on this soon!

Hyper 7 Brushless converted with Traxxas VXL Combo! (FIRST TEST)

The motor combo is not really suited to a 1/8th scale vehicle but it seems to be working ok this is the very first test! Performance seems fine except the motor does get very hot due to the extra size and weight of the car. Remember this brushless combo is designed for a 1/10th scale platform and slightly underpowered for 1/8th but its a very good option if you are not look for major speed. Heat wise this can be sorted with a heatsink and fan (in the video only heatsink fitted) also may be worth while buying the accessory fan for the esc.

From this run i got 30mins run time easy with moderate to hard bashing using a turnigy 5000mah 2s lipo. These ESC's can handle 3s but struggle on 1/10th vehicles so on a 1/8th it would be risky.

What i used:

Ansmann Hyper 8 brushless conversion set £40 in the uk (included all screws, motor mount, battery box and fitting instructions)
Traxxas Velineon ESC and motor 3500kv
Spektrum DX3S transmitter and reciever
Turnigy 5000mah lipoly battery 2s!
Stock Hobao Servo (rebranded futaba)
Ansmann On road tires (very cheap and good quality)

This seems a good alternative to a mamba max if you are looking for something with good speed and performance but if you are looking for extreme speeds go with a mamba max i would have done this but they are very expensive for what they are!

Advantages + Disadvantages over nitro!

ADVANTAGES:

No noise
No mess
Faster (debatable)
Batteries can be recharged hundreds of times whereas nitro can only be used once!
ESC controls brakes so only 1 servo needed saving weight and battery

DISADVANTAGES:

Very expensive (lipos/motor & ESC can be extremely costly)
Heat Can damage components

There are many more but you get the idea.

So there you go a nice first video with more to come very soon so subscribe!

total cost of conversion £120

Thanks for watching!

E-revo HD On Board Video

Pinion change on E-revo

Changed the pinion today on my E-revo from a 16t to 19t. Theres not really that much change but slightly more top end speed. Will post speed test results soon.

E-revo clean up

It was time to give the e-revo a quick clean up from running in very dusty gravel, the greatest thing will a waterproof truck is that its so easy just to spray it down with the hose. Just remove all the electronics the motor is in fact 100% waterproof as it is brushed so cannot be harmed by water but i removed it anyway. You can see the difference in the last two images.

Single Titan 775 In e-revo (Pictures, What i used and Temps)

So here goes:

What i used:

  • 4x10mm Countersunk screws (4x8mm would also work)
  • Single titan 775
  • RW 32 DP Pinion 16 teeth for 5mm shaft
  • Stock motor mount
  • 2x Turnigy 2s 5000mah lipos
  • Gv models li-protector
I took it for a test drive an hour ago everything seemed ok and straight away i noticed a huge performance gain even on a 16t pinion, i was taking it easy for first 10 mins just to let
everything settle down etc. Now i got a little excited and went all the way a stupid thing to do i know with a new motor but i just couldn't resist. WOW the torque of that motor is beyond belief twin titans just dont compare to the sheer power that the single 775 produces. All was going well until the pinion dropped off. The main problem i found was the shaft is a little short on the motor so i had no choice but to move the pinion back a little to stop it from falling off.

Now that was an easy fix and i can't see it giving me any more problems.

As for temps i was getting:

MOTOR : 93.02F
ESC : 89.6F

was getting the same reading on my DX3S aswell so that backs it all up.

I think a 19t or more could be used but keep an eye on the temps. Im not looking for speed so a 16t should see me fine for now.

Some of my past RC's!

I thought it would be nice to show you Some of my past rc's!

First up is a Nanda Raptor, which i can tell you i didnt have a good experience with. I originally brought it from FTQ models in Ilford, It cost me £400 which was a complete waste of money considering it only worked a few times and being new to the hobby i didnt have a clue as to what was wrong. In the end i couldnt be bothered with it and sold it on ebay getting only £110 for it which was a great dissapointment!

Heres a pic:

Next up was a Hpi E10:

From the E10 i then moved onto a Nitro Sport from traxxas which was a great model but sadly had to go due to needing money to buy bigger better cars!

Traxxas Nitro Sport:
Losi Mini Rock Crawler:
This car was great it was only really suited to indoors use due to it being small (1/18th Scale).
I have also had a few low budget cars such as the Ansmann Macnum, Madrat and Royal Flash just for fun due to them being so cheap to buy. The only problem with these cars is that they are very bad quality and parts tend to break extremely easy.
Hope you enjoyed this post!
